Former Employee Sues Coach Over Weight Discrimination

Coach has gotten some major publicity as of late, but not the kind they’d want.

Coach made headlines recently, but not for good reasons.

Apparently, the company is being sued by a former employee who is citing discrimination as the reason. Elizabeth DeLorean, a former store manager in a Detroit branch is not happy with the way Coach treated her — especially in regards to the statements they  made about her weight.

After working for Coach for more than a decade, DeLorean gained 100 pounds which she believed was the reason for her dismissal from the company. Coach’s area manager says that she was terminated due to performance issues, but when her hear the statements they made regarding her weight, it’s hard to believe performance was the real problem.

According to Elizabeth and her attorney, DeLorean’s managers would ask, “Whatever happened to the girl who would bring in her Lean Cuisine for lunch every day?”

Fired Over Weight Gain? Woman Suing Coach Retailer For Discrimination

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) – Coach is being sued by a former Detroit-area store manager who says weight gain led to her dismissal after more than 10 years at the high-end handbag retailer. Elizabeth DeLorean’s discrimination lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Detroit federal court, says she was encouraged to watch TV’s “The Biggest Loser” and reminded about previous Lean Cuisine lunches.

This is a touchy subject, but we do need to address the issue of work discrimination. A company cannot just terminate any worker based on weight (unless it is specifically stated in the contract and if it is, what kind of contract is that?). However, it is still unsure whether she was let go due to weight gain or performance problems. If it’s the former, we hope that DeLorean will be compensated fairly. If it’s the latter, then let this be a lesson learned to people who try to con their way into getting money.

Apparently, Kanye West was also discriminated against for not being gay.
