There’s always an occasion to wear pastels, and  Sharon Mosely shares some great tips on how to wear one of the most beautiful colors in the pastel family- lavender.

Loving Lavender

If you want to dream of sunnier days ahead, imagine lilacs blooming and rolling hills covered in fragrant lavender. Then mix in a little Prince and David Bowie, and meditate on just how you can infuse some of this visually stimulating color palette to everyday life…and everyday wardrobe. It’s time to add a breath of fresh lavender and get into the spirit of a new season.

“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level,” says Lea Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, who has proclaimed “Ultra-violet” to be the current color of the moment.”From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive ultra-violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”

Purple has long had a mysterious “aura” among mystics…and even rock stars (even the Super Bowl got into the power of purple, turning downtown Minneapolis into a purple haze), but this year, fashion designers have embraced a passion for all shades of purple, especially lavender. You don’t have to go to a galaxy far, far away to experience the mood-lifting feeling of purple. Here are 10 ways to love (and wear) lavender this spring.

Save lavender for a special occasion

You may have shrunk from wearing violet in the past, but if you want to stand out this spring or summer at that family wedding or the high school prom or even for Easter Sunday brunch, then consider livening up the party with a lavender dress. Whether long and flowing like the chiffon maxis on the runway at The Row, or short and sassy, like the floral ones at Coach, lavender may be the way to go.

Take lavender to work

The luscious color can transform a professional wardrobe in head-to-toe violet pantsuits with matching jackets and slim trousers. Take a cue from Victoria Beckham and step out of the black and white pack at the office this spring and suit up in chic pastels. And lavender is also inspiring men’s wardrobes this spring, too. Guys, add the hot fashion color to shirts, sweaters or ties for a powerful punch of pizzazz.Chill out with lavender.

The sugary pastels aren’t just for spring and summer this year.

There’s still plenty of winter left according to Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction. So, wrap up in a lavender wool trench coat seen at Dries Van Note or cozy up in oversized sweaters and tulip skirts courtesy of Michael Kors and Proenza Shouler. Warm up a cold dreary day fast.

Get casual with lavender

Other designers like Tom Ford give lavender a playful twist with shiny satin baseball jackets and leather jogging pants. At Tibi, lavender shows up in the spring collection in cropped knit tops paired with long Bermuda shorts. Don’t be afraid to experiment with the sporty side of purple putting your own spin on the color. There are also lots of free-spirited jumpsuits in the spring fashion line-up that can easily be dressed up or down.

Accessorize with lavender

If a purple pantsuit or violet maxi dress does not put you in a great mood, then why not start getting in on the color trend of the moment with a new pair of amethyst drop earrings or a pair of purple pumps? Or an embossed leather tote? Or a floral printed scarf? Watch for lavender to show up on a face near you, too with eyeshadows, highlighters and lips…and of course, hair. And the ultimate lavender accessory to love? A huge feathery “jellyfish” hat…just check out the latest haute headwear by milliner Phillip Treacy envisioned for “this ethereal yet very powerful woman” at Valentino’s recent spring couture show. Amazing. Purple power at its best.
