How To Deal With Relatives This Holiday Season

Christmas can get quite exciting, but for some people, they dread seeing their relatives this holiday season. There’s just those awkward conversations that you don’t want to get into and thankfully, I’ve got the best tips on how you can overcome them.

It’s inevitable. There are repetitive questions that you get sick of answering almost every year. Like come on, are you not allowed to live the life you want? Anyhow, family is family and oftentimes, you won’t see eye-to-eye. If they ask you something, it’s probably coming from the heart and out of concern. But hey, I completely understand if you get annoyed…which is why I’m here to help you answer these questions with class, finesse and without offending anyone. Let’s channel the cold weather and dissipate the heat!

Tips to Politely Answer Questions from Relatives This Holiday Season

If there’s one thing you don’t want to happen, that is to spark a heated argument with a relative during a holiday season party. The best way to approach this situation is to channel some humor, this way, you and your relative will have a good laugh instead of just getting at each other’s throats. Are you excited to hear out these tips? Let’s begin.

1. So are you seeing anyone yet?!

If I had a penny for every time I was asked this question, I would be filthy rich. Like Bill Gates wealthy.

This question can be answered in a variety of ways. If it’s a new relationship, tell Aunt Linda that you are, but it’s new and you’re just enjoying each others company. Once you disclose his or her name and occupation, Aunt Linda should back off.

If the answer is no, give a confident no! My answer was no for so long my family probably got sick of asking. But sometimes all you need to do is reassure your family that you’re really, truly happy being single for now and you know you’ll find the right person eventually. Your relatives response will probably be something along the lines of “oh well that’s okay, you’re still so young”, it’s hard not to be annoyed by that response since it comes off as pity, but keep your calm! Your family is only asking because they care.

2. When are we going to see a ring on your finger?

If you’ve been with your SO for awhile, this question is inevitable. Still not warranted, but inevitable.

My first thought when I hear this is wondering if everyone somehow believes there’s this marriage deadline. Well, there’s not. YOU CAN GET MARRIED AT ANY AGE. Or, not at all. Your choice.

Just let your relatives know that you’re happy with your relationship and you do see a future, but you’re in no rush (if that’s the case). Also, assure them that they’ll get the wedding invites once the right time comes.

3. What are you doing for work now?

I feel like there’s no short way to answer this question. Whenever you say what you do, you will most likely be asked for more detail. Who exactly your company is, what your daily workload is like, etc. Honestly, just answer the question as succinctly as you can. If they won’t stop talking about your job, just lie and say you forgot you had to tell your mom something to get away.

Obviously, if you LOVE talking about your job then go for it!

4. How do you afford to live there?

Depending on where you live, you might actually avoid this question. I’m jealous.

I live in Los Angeles, and before that San Diego. Since my relatives have deep roots in the Midwest, I can understand their concern. But if I’m not homeless, then I’m obviously affording it. I guess the be response to this is just saying “I’m doing just fine”.

5. When are you moving back home?

I CAN’T WITH THIS QUESTION. It is the worst question to get. I don’t even know how to respond politely because I’m so infuriated about it. If you’ve flown the coop, then you’ve probably gotten this question a time or two.

A good response for everyone: I have no plans to. If you are planning on moving back, then by all means, let your family know. Otherwise, maybe try explaining to your family why you moved and why you’re still there. Chances are, you love where you live (or you should). Maybe you moved for a job, a boyfriend or to find warmer weather. Whatever the reason, there IS a reason. The sooner you can enlighten your family on why you live where you live, the better.
