A Friend That Helps You But Laughs First

We need to take time and thank divine providence for best friends. They are usually the kind of people who you share your deepest desires and shallowest infatuations with. They can be your siblings or parents or a random person you once met when you are buying the latest Game of Thrones merchandise. But how can you really tell if this person is your best friend? Here are some signs.

First, you are on the level of friendship where when you encounter those oh so embarrassing moments (i.e. tripping, slipping, etc.) and you look at her to ask for a clue on what to do next, she just laughs. She laughs so hard but then she’ll help you and then laugh some more, although this time, you’re laughing with her. They do that not to be mean, but to make you realize that those kinds of moments are just a minor glitch in your whole existence and you can just stand up again.

Second, you’ve had at least a dozen sleepovers already. You don’t really have anything to do but watch movies and talk about that one girl she doesn’t like (admit it, that’s part of sleepovers). You talk about what bothers you if there’s any and you know she’s gonna support you.

Third, she’s that one person who is brutally honest and you’re okay with that. The kind of honesty where if you heard it from an acquaintance, you’ll probably get offended. But if she’s the one who slammed you with it, you know she’s doing it because she cares for you.

And most importantly, this is a given but I’m gonna say this anyway, a best friend is a person who is always going to be there even if everybody else already left. A person who will stay by your side when you have nothing else to give. Even if you think you’ve hit the rock bottom and there’s no going back. She’ll lie there with you and gently coax you into standing up and fighting again.

So, if you have this person in your life right now, look at her, give her a smile and a hug, and greet her “Happy National Best Friends Day!”. Treat her with some food and good deeds (it’s always safe to bank some good deeds so that someday you can use them if you want something from her, jk, but seriously) and celebrate this milestone of yor friendship.
