First lady hairstyles show class and empowerment. What I love most about the US First Ladies is that they’ve broken women stereotypes the best way possible. Sarah Polk was known as the writer behind all of James Polk’s inspiring speeches. Edith Wilson took over his husband’s presidency Woodrow Wilson when he suffered a stroke during his term. (She was disliked for it but she kept on going) Hillary Clinton directed policies, became the head of Task Force on National Healthcare, was part of Barack Obama’s Secretary of state, and is now running for the presidency herself. Talk about serious #goals, am I right?

You might be thinking they did all of that with exposed dark eye circles, untucked shirts, and knotted hair. NOT AT ALL. Despite their busy schedule, they kept their beauty in check–which makes me love them even more! They have remained powerful, both as first ladies and style icons.

Hair accessories were all the rage when Martha Washington was first lady. The lilac color matches her eyes perfectly.
