18 Fashion Hacks That Can Save Your Life

November 7, 2019 By Perry Belcher Leave a Comment

Ever experienced a fashion disaster in the most inopportune moment imaginable? If so, you need to know these fashion hacks!

Fashion Hacks You Should Know

We’ve all had those fashion disasters we don’t like talking about… you know, those moments that make us want to crawl into a hole and never come out. What kind of disasters are we talking about? We’re talking about the ones where your pants rip and you’re stuck at work… on the day you decided to go commando, or the one where you’re wearing a baby blue silk shirt and your pits are sweating… bad. Hey, we’ve all been there, so in order to avoid ever going there again, here are some useful fashion hacks to know that could potentially save your life in the future.

But not only did we include hacks that will shave off years of embarrassment and shame, we also included genius tips and tricks on making your clothes last. Whether you’re a gal or guy, whip out that pen and paper (well, you’re on the internet so I guess you don’t need those) and start taking notes.

By the end of this post, you’ll be able to put Fashion Hack Expert on your business card.

1. Make Your Own Vintage Shirt

Want to turn your stiff shirts into soft vintage shirts? Brine them! Soak the shirt in salt solution for three days and you’ll get the softness you’re looking for.

2. Open Fly

Never have an open fly again. Use a key chain ring to keep that zipper in place. Here’s how to do it:

3. White Deodorant Marks

Those nasty white deodorant stains are hard to remove, but not anymore. Use baby wipes and those evil, embarrassing marks will be gone for good.

4. Pants in Boots

How do you fit non-skinny denim jeans inside your boots? This is the step-by-step trick:

5. Scratched & Damaged High Heels

Before buying a new pair of pumps or heels, revamp a pair of old ones by applying glitter to the heel. This will give you an entirely new pair of shoes!

6. Angora & Mohair Shedding Sweaters

Angora and Mohair sweaters are very prone to shedding. What you can do is put the sweater inside a ziplock bag and put the bag in the freezer for at least three hours to prevent the hairs from shedding any further! Neat trick, right?

7. Oil Stain on Clothes

Can’t get rid of an oil stain on your clothes? Simply put baby powder over it and leave overnight. The next morning, brush away the powder and the oil stain should be gone. If it’s a persistent stain, reapply baby powder and repeat the process until the stain disappears.

8. Brighten Up White Sneakers

Are your white sneakers starting to look old and dirty? Brighten them up by cleaning them with a mixture of baking soda and detergent and then using a toothbrush to remove the stains.

9. Stop the Runs

Wearing tights is a must this holiday season, which is why you need to do whatever it takes to prevent runs from ruining your perfectly-manicured holiday look. There are two ways to do just that: with this ingenious trick or by spraying your stockings with a thick coat of hairspray. This will hold the fibers together and prevent them from tearing.

If your stockings already have holes and runs, you can prevent them from getting worse by applying clear nail polish on the edges of the run to keep it from stretching.

10. Stuck Zipper

Stuck zipper? You can un-stick it using Vaseline, olive oil, Chapstick, or a granite pencil on the track.

11. Hemming Problems

It’s best to always be prepared, but how do you do this without having a kit the size of a small luggage with you at all times and looking like a resident vagabond? Double tape. Double tape works several fashion miracles, like keeping your plunging neckline in place and repairing those unruly hems.

12. Zip Me Up

No one there to zip you up? Get a ribbon, string or thread, slip it through the zipper and pull it up yourself. That’s what I call being independent.

13. Cleaning Suede Shoes

Suede shoes are hard to clean, but not if you have stale bread crust lying around. Stale bread crust can magically remove dirt from any suede shoe. Why? I have no idea; I just know that it works! When using this method, be sure to rub your shoes gently. You don’t want to scuff the suede!

If you don’t have stale bread at home, a nail file also works.

14. Stretch Out Your Shoes

Are your shoes tight? Put a Ziploc bag filled with water in your shoes, then put and leave your shoes in the freezer overnight. The frozen water will help stretch your shoes out come morning.

Another method is to wear thick socks, then wear the shoes and blow dry them. This will also help stretch your shoes out.

15. Taking Care of Dark Denim

Dark washed jeans can easily fade with frequent washing. To avoid fading, add ½ cup of distilled vinegar in your last washing cycle to keep your jeans as dark as the day you bought them.

16. Threading Hoodie String

If the thread in your hoodie fell out of the hole, there are two ways you can put it back: you can attach a safety pin at the end of the string or put the string inside a straw. Once done, thread the pin/straw through the hole until you reach the other opening. Voila!

17. Ironing Collars

Deal with small wrinkles on your clothes and collars with your trusty flat iron. Just be cautious about the temperature. Straighten your clothes like you would your hair, except this time, you don’t have to worry about damage.

18. Cover Poking Underwire

Is your bra underwire poking you? Use moleskin to cover the wire as a temporary solution. But please, get a new bra after this because no one should have to suffer through the pain of an exposed underwire.

I feel more fashion-savvy already with these hacks. I literally never knew how easy it was to remedy fashion disasters and prevent them from EVER happening again.

With these hacks, you should never find yourself in a precarious situation ever again and if you do, well, didn’t you learn from the first time you went commando and your pant seams split? C’mon now.
