2016 Fashion Trends That Need To Die In 2017

As we say goodbye to the year, we also have to stay goodbye to most 2016 fashion trends. While some of this year’s big trends are here to stay, others have proved to be impractical or overused. And a new year is the perfect opportunity to try fresh, new things! So before we welcome 2017 with open arms, take some time to clear your closet of these 2016 fashion trends that should stay in 2016.

2016 Fashion Trends You Shouldn’t Be Wearing Come New Year

There are always two sides to a trend. On one hand, I find myself loving certain trends so much, I’d wear them every day! But at the same time, sometimes we need to move on from trends, especially if they’ve run their course. I think when we see practically every girl on the street wearing them, or when we get physically tired of a trend, it’s time to say goodbye. So here are the 2016 fashion trends I’ll be leaving behind this new year, along with all my regrets and mistakes!

1. Super Skinny Jeans

The skinny jean is truly dead now. While 2016 fashion trends saw the emergence of comfier alternatives like culottes and joggers, I think 2017 is the year we totally trash our skinny jeans. Believe me, the first time you try a pair of joggers, you’ll never want to wear anything else.

2. Sky High Heels

I’m sure we’re all relieved to know the era of sky-high heels is over. Trend forecasts for 2017 say comfier shoes will reign supreme: mules, slides, and sneakers are comfier (and safer!) alternatives even the most stylish girls will wear in the coming year.

3. Plain Sneakers

While plain white sneakers should probably stay in the pool of 2016 fashion trends, don’t throw out your white kicks just yet! Fashion insiders say the trends are shifting towards embellished or patchwork sneakers. So all you need to do is buy a few patches and personalize your sneakers for 2017!

4. Too Much Rose Gold

Admit it, we’ve all fallen trap to rose gold mania. I’ll be the first to say it: even my phone is rose gold! But I think this trend has done its job, and it’s time for a fresh color to take over. Rose gold everything is a bit tacky, if you think about it.

5. Button-Down Skirts

It’s been about 2 years since button-front skirts invaded every girl’s closet again, and I think 2 years is more than enough! Aside from the fact that button-front skirts don’t really flatter all body shapes, they’re also awfully casual and pretty limited in terms of mixing and matching.

6. Overalls

The idea of wearing overalls again is one of those 2016 fashion trends we thought was a good idea but immediately regretted. They’re so impractical to wear (going to the restroom is a pain!), and they make most girls look like oversized children.

7. Inner Wear as Outerwear

I file this under 2016 fashion trends I could never get behind. I don’t know, something about wearing lingerie as outerwear doesn’t sit well with me. Maybe some girls can pull it off, but it’s definitely not for everyone.

8. Socks With Sandals

I’m so happy 2016 fashion trends are making way for new ideas because socks with sandals have got to be the worst thing to come back in style this year. They came with the whole preppy explosion earlier this year, but I hate seeing bumpy toes and sagging socks! If you want to go preppy in 2017, go for Mary Janes and socks instead.

While these 2016 fashion trends clearly don’t have a place in my wardrobe anymore, so many other trends do. Velvet, mules, culottes, and jumpsuits were just some of my favorite 2016 fashion trends. But socks and sandals clearly were not! Which 2016 fashion trends will you leave behind? Share them with me in the comments section!
