The evolution of fashion never seizes to amaze me. In many respects so much has changed, and yet when you compare today’s styles to those of other decades there are so many similarities to be found.

From simple “must-cover-all” dresses in the 90’s to mini-skirts and skinny jeans in 2018. Here’s how fashion has evolved since the 1950s.

1950’s

The 50s introduced ultra feminine styles such as full billowy skirts, belts that accentuated a small waist and womanly curves. Shapely bust lines, narrow skirts and sleeveless blouses were all the rage; women also said goodbye to the over-sized shoulder-pads and welcomed in more rounded shoulders influenced by Christian Dior’s “New Look.”

1960’s

Hippie fashion started becoming mainstream during the 1960’s. This fashion statement symbolized rebellion and a turning away from cultural norms. Bell bottoms, long skirts, belly baring tops, headbands, and floral prints ruled this decade.

1970’s

In the 70’s bold accessories were highly embraced. This was a very sophisticated and glamorous decade with modest hemlines; cowl neck sweaters, and of course poofy hair. Ponchos, high cut boots and polyesters could be seen everywhere!

1980’s

The 80’s can also be called the decade of the “Material Girls”. Madonna and punk music were very influential in determining the hottest fashion trends of the moment. Cool accessories ruled the 80s, from layered necklaces and chunky jewelry to headbands, bold belts and stylish gloves.

1990’s

90’s fashion saw a combination of hip hop, grunge and wave. Tennis shoes, baggy clothes, and oversize t-shirts proved that it was all about masculine undertones in those days.

2000’s

This decade featured a mash-up of previous trends with a modern, more feminine look. Girly dresses, mini skirts, tube tops, denim jackets, low rise jeans and lots and lots of sequins pretty much summed up the 2000s.
