It’s time to hit Sephora!
It’s the holidays and, if you’re one of the lucky few who have to fly out to see relatives, you can already feel the frustration and pain you’re set to endure as soon as you step foot into that airport I currently find myself two days away from a 5 hour (not complaining, it could be a lot worse) flight that leaves so early in the morning, it’s basically still night. The lack of sleep, coupled with the stress, layered on top of the dehydration I’ll be facing means that my skin is going to need some extra TLC before, during and after my flight.
If you’re traveling this holiday season, do yourself a favor and pamper your skin as much as is humanly possible by bringing these beauty essentials with you in your carry on luggage. I promise you’ll need all of them.
1. Lip Balm
As we all know by now flying does two things to you: wears you down and dries out your skin. To keep your lips hydrated and plump, I highly recommend putting your lip balm (or several) into your carry on luggage for easy access and reapplying throughout your flight like it’s your job.
My lip balm of choice is Smith’s Rosebud Salve. It’s hydrated, made with all natural ingredients, smells just like a bouquet of roses, and will leave a flattering, soft pink tint on your lips.
2. Evian Facial Mist
I bought this on a whim a couple of years ago while in the checkout line at Sephora (you know how that goes) and have kept it with me ever since. They package these little guys in 3 oz. spray bottles, making them the perfect carry on item. The facial mist is mineralized water that promises to keep your skin hydrated. Spritz thrice before boarding, twice during your flight, and once after landing to keep your skin quenched.
3. Toner
Evian Facial Mist is not toner, so I recommend bringing both with you. My toner of choice is Andalou’s 1000 Roses Floral Toner. Because the bottle is too big to bring on board with me, I usually buy a 3-oz. spray bottle from Target and decant my toner into that.
Regardless of what toner you’re using, it’s important to bring it on board with you to give your skin some much needed TLC during the flight. Do absolutely everything you can to keep your skin hydrated.
4. Hand Cream
Yup, every part of you dries out when flying, which is why you should bring hand cream with you. Although, with that said, who doesn’t carry hand cream in their purse? It’s a must whether you’re flying or not! Especially given that the liquid soap in public restrooms is so damn drying.
5. Lipstick
While I don’t recommend wearing foundation when flying (tinted moisturizer or BB cream is okay, but foundation is much too heavy for your skin and will only cause you to break out), I do recommend bringing a lipstick on board with you to apply as soon as you’ve landed. It’s a simple touch that will make you look more done up than you are, something we all desperately need after a long flight.
The lipstick I carry around with me everywhere (it’s true, I do carry it around everywhere) is MAC Viva Glam II. It’s a darker shade of red that looks flattering on all skin tones and works well for any occasion.
6. Moisturizer
Yup, you should bring a moisturizer on board with you for the same reason you bring your toner — to keep your skin hydrated. Take the time to massage your moisturizer onto your face and feel free to reapply as you see fit. Your skin will let you know when it’s time to reapply.
7. Concealer
There ain’t nothing wrong with wanting to hide your blemishes if you’re flying. This is for the ladies who wear foundation on a daily basis and feel strange going anywhere barefaced. I completely understand which is why I recommend bringing concealer with you and either touching up before you go through security or once you’re on board. Do make sure it’s a light concealer that won’t clog your pores and settle into fine lines.
My favorite concealer of the moment is Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Concealer. Tarte is an incredible company that does amazing things and delivers only the finest products made with the world’s best, most natural, ingredients. This concealer won’t crease and is made with maracuja oil, therefore keeping your skin hydrated and looking flawless. It comes in a variety of colors and will not disappoint. I even turned my mom onto this concealer and she is not easy to please.
8. Sunscreen
You should be wearing sunscreen at all times, regardless of whether you’re going out or staying in. This is the case if you’re flying as well. Bring sunscreen with you to protect your skin in flight and upon landing.
9. Cream Blush
The closer you get to touchdown, the more able you’ll be to get ready and prepare for your arrival. This includes reapplying a fresh layer of BB cream (after you’ve removed your old one, of course), swiping some lipstick on and, if you’re in the mood, applying cream blush to your cheeks for a lively glow after a long flight.
I recommend cream over powder as powder will only highlight the dehydrated state your skin is in, whereas cream will blend in seamlessly with your skin and give you a natural glow. As you may have guessed, my favorite cream blush is also from Tarte. It’s their Tarte Cheek Stain, which is made with natural ingredients and will leave your skin looking radiant.
10. Makeup Wipes
If you arrived to the airport with BB cream on, I would wipe it all off once you board that plane. Bring some makeup wipes with you because, well, you never know when you’re going to need them so it’s best to be prepared.
11. Perfume
This isn’t an essential, but a glamorous touch that will make your flight that much more enjoyable. Hardly anyone likes traveling, so you should at least attempt to lighten the mood with your favorite fragrance. It will make you feel good. I promise.
12. Brita Water Bottle
Last, but not least, if you can, bring a Brita water bottle with you. Sure, you could always buy a water bottle after you’ve passed security, but could you live with yourself knowing you just spent $5 on Smart Water that normally costs $2.50? Bring a Brita water bottle with you and you’ll have access to all the water you want, which is crucial given how dehydrated you’re about to be in one hour.
With all that said, traveling can be fun if you’re with the right person and have the right attitude. Your trip begins as soon as you step foot in that airport, so be sure to have fun and take care of your skin! Did we mention you should take extra care of your skin? Okay, that’s the last time I say it, so enjoy your flight and those salty peanuts!
