6 Ways To Wear Ugly Christmas Sweaters

December 22, 2015 By Perry Belcher Leave a Comment

This is one trend we hope never goes out of style.

I am all for ugly Christmas sweaters. Why? They’re reflective of the holiday season, which is full of cheer and laughter, and are just so damn kitschy I can’t help but develop a soft spot for the bright colors and terrible designs. As you could tell, I’m a lover of kitsch, which is why I hope this trend never goes away. Although, with that said, I would definitely still rock mine if it did.

The best part about wearing ugly Christmas sweaters is shopping for them! While major fashion retailers have started selling their own version of the sweater, it’s always fun to visit vintage shops to find truly authentic sweaters that you know were hip at one time. Vintage shops are where you’ll find the gaudiest patterns and craziest colors, so make a day of it and thrift shop till your arms ache with the load of Christmas sweaters you’ll wear over and over again this season.

Once you’ve found “the one” here are 6 ways your favorite celebrities style the hilarious trend:

1. As A Cardigan

Strangely enough, Beyonce manages to turn this ugly trend into a high-fashion one with her out of control Christmas cardigan. In addition to it being ridiculously outlandish, I love the ornaments and tinsel strung around the sweater. If you’re going the cardigan route, be sure to rock a pair of crazy Christmas sunglasses too. If it’s good enough for Bey, it’s good enough for all of us.

2. As A Really Tacky Vest

There are so many things that are right with this vest. 1) the colors, 2) the Brady Bunch-esque design of the vest, 3) the fact that it’s a vest. Want to get really fun with this look? Go for a bright vest and pair it with a black polo neck and black pants. Then you’ll be ready for your awkward Christmas photos.

3. As A Dress

Wearing your ugly sweater as a dress is a cute way to make the look a bit more fashionable. That is, if you’re too embarrassed to go all the way with it. Find a sweater that’s dress length (this may require sifting through the men’s area) and get it taken in at the waist.

Mission accomplished.

4. As A 4-Person Whatever This Is

Okay, this may not be practical, but if you’re able to somehow construct a 4-person sweater, you’re in for a hell of a good time and will take the best pictures of your life.

This sweater is absolutely awesome in every way.

5. With Bill Murray’s Face

I love the tackiness of the 4-person sweater, but it’s the Bill Murray sweater that takes first place. I mean, it’s Bill Murray. What more could a person want in a sweater?

6. As A Matching Ensemble With Your Pals

Have fun with the trend and coordinate ugly sweaters with your friends! It’s a fun way to bond, an excuse to shop and will make for great memories.

Fashion wasn’t meant to be taken so seriously, which is why the ugly Christmas sweater trend is a great one that we hope sticks around forever.

To take the trend to the next level, make it a competition among your group of friends to see who can find the most outlandish, wackiest sweater. First place winner gets to keep everyone’s Christmas gifts.

Now that you’ve got your ugly Christmas sweater on, take this quiz to find out which holiday song you are!
