As a yoga instructor, one of the common questions I receive is about the difference between Bikram yoga vs hot yoga. “What class should I enroll?” “What should I expect?” “How hot is it?” I might as well answer them now to help you decide what type of “sweaty yoga” is best for you.
1. Temperature
Whether you’re in hot yoga or Bikram yoga, you are going to sweat – a lot. That’s why studios provide you with towels or encourage you to bring one (don’t forget to sanitize your mat every session too). However, you may find the temperature of hot yoga to be more comfortable since Bikram’s rooms need to be about 105 degrees Fahrenheit with no less than 40% humidity. While hot yoga room requires a little less with 92 degrees Fahrenheit (33 Celsius).
2. Poses
Bikram yoga is based on hatha yoga while hot yoga adheres to Vinyasa flow. This explains why Bikram follows 26 specific poses each time while hot yoga seems to be more lenient with one movement flowing nicely to the next. Nevertheless, hot yoga teachers are usually encouraged to list down their poses before class.
3. Environment
Bikram yoga vs hot yoga can also be differed in terms of environment. While both are steamy, Bikram studios are often well-lit with mirrors on different sides. This is in contrast with hot yoga’s rooms, which are darker.
4. Instructors
Bikram yoga is founded by the guy in the picture, Bikram Choudhury, and teachers are trained under his methodologies. Only studios with official affiliations or franchise from Bikram Yoga can call their classes as such.
5. Classes
I’ve attended both classes, and I enjoyed them immensely, but I find hot yoga to be more informal as there’s music and people are more likely to be allowed to interact with one another.
