Things We Learned Back In College| College Advice

February 21, 2018 By Perry Belcher Leave a Comment

College advice can be very helpful to those who are anxious about their college experience.

Thinking back to my college years, I can remember being extremely nervous and overwhelmed, with not knowing what to expect. Thankfully, I received words of encouragement and advice from my family and friends back then . If not for those kind words, I may not have been able to adapt as well as I did; it helped me to survive the struggles of college life.  However, some of the best college lessons were gained not just by word of mouth but through personal experiences.

College is crucial step towards adulthood and independence but it’s also a fun and memorable experience.Whether you’re just entering college or you’re halfway through, it’s never too late for college advice!

Here are some college advice tips that I want to share with you

Use this moment to work on yourself

College is a preparatory stage before entering the corporate world. Take this time to develop your skills and personality. You have limitless opportunities, resources and a bit of free time in college to work on yourself, so take advantage of it.

Don’t forget to socialize and communicate

Don’t miss the chance to find friends. Personally, I found my true friends back in college. It’s good to find people who share common goals, values, and hobbies, but don’t be restricted by this. Find people who can also teach you something new.  Genuine friendships don’t happen in a snap, but once cemented, the friends you find in college can last a lifetime.

Build your resume

Employers are always seeking people with experience so use your college years to build up your resume. Apply for a few part-time jobs related to your field of study, volunteer your services at non-profit organizations, or ask if there are any jobs on campus. These will not only help to enhance your resume but the skills and hands-on experience gained will make your transition from college to career much easier.

Explore what you love the most

Whether you’re into mathematics, natural sciences or economics, college is the time to really explore your interests. Do some extra research to enhance your knowledge of certain subjects and topics. They say that it’s easier to absorb things if you’re fond of it, so why not give it a try?

Drink caffeine moderately

A cup of coffee is a life saver, especially during toxic days and examination week. But don’t indulge yourself in drinking caffeine too much. Keep yourself up while studying by eating healthy foods, drinking a lot of water, and getting enough rest. But if you can’t resist, take a sip of coffee in moderation.

Be professional

You are an adult now. Since college is your training ground for the working world, practice professionalism by being productive and efficient. Start by attending classes regularly and beating deadlines for your projects. If these things become a habit, your college life will be further enhanced.

Always have a backup plan

If destiny doesn’t agree with your plan, always have a backup. It could be a technical error on your laptop on one of your presentations, some wardrobe malfunction or just another bad hair day. Whatever that is, having other options ready will lessen the hassle of your busy day.

Leap out of your comfort zone

Since you’re getting to know more about yourself, it’s the right time to take a leap out of your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid to explore and try new things. Be confident that you can do all of them! It’s all about courage and taking risks!

Find a balance between work and play

Every now and then it’s okay to reward yourself for your hard work. Life is really about balance, and although you want to do well at your studies, you also need to enjoy all the experiences that comes with being in college. So go to those fun college parties, join a sorority, take a trip out-of-town with your roommates, enter  those challenging chess tournaments. Whatever you do, just make sure you add a little fun to your life!
