Elf is a holiday movie I’m guilty of watching one too many times during this time around. But then again, who can blame me? The story’s heartwarming and the antics are funny — a recipe for a good Christmas movie!
It’s one of the films that will stand the test of time for generations to come. Don’t believe me? Check out these 10 reasons on why Elf is one of the best holiday movies of all time!
Why Elf Is Our Go-To Holiday Movie
When I was a little girl, I believed in Santa Claus, his reindeers — I knew their names by heart — and his elves. I had this idea that they were hiding in the North Pole making sure that no one knew about their whereabouts so that their toy making process wouldn’t be disrupted.
Although it goes without saying that I’ve already left those beliefs in my childhood, I have to say that Santa and his team still have a special place in my heart. I remember the days when I’d handwrite a letter to him and carefully place it next to a plate of cookies and a glass of milk, wishing as hard as ever that I made it to the Nice list.
Maybe this is why I love holiday movies such as Elf. It gives me a chance to reconnect with my childhood and relive certain memories.
If you haven’t watched Elf yet, I suggest you make it a part of your holiday movie collection. Need more convincing? Keep on reading for the lessons you can pick up from it!
1. Smiling’s My Favorite

Lesson #1 is all about something we can practice everyday. A reminder to be positive and meet the world with a fabulous smile!
2. The Elf Diet
Although the Elf diet is something we can only dream about, it’s good to know that we don’t have to deprive ourselves of a little treat every now and then. After all, Christmas season is a good enough excuse to grab some a few extra desserts, right?
3. Sing Loud For All To Hear
This is something I fully believe in 100%. Whenever I feel worn out from the Christmas rush, I listen to a playlist of holiday songs. Giving myself a couple of minutes to sing along with my favorites leaves me feeling much better and almost also guarantees someone singing with me halfway through the song. It’s one surefire way to spread the Christmas spirit!
4. Snuggling Is Important

Lesson #4 is about everything that this Elf quote stands for. EVERYTHING.
5. Santa’s Coming

There’s a scene in the movie where Buddy, the elf, gets all riled up upon finding out that Santa’s coming. The sheer happiness on his face is absolutely contagious. It’s a stark reminder of how we have so much to look forward to in the coming days and how we should all bask in the excitement!
6. Cotton Headed Ninny Muggins
The term cotton headed ninny muggins always makes me giggle. Aside from it’s cuteness though, the phrase is also a reminder of how we should never forget to laugh, even if it’s at ourselves. After all, it’s no fun being a grinch during the holidays!
7. Candy Cane Forest
One of things I love about Buddy is how he never seems to lose his childlike wonder. For him, the world is still candy canes and gum drops, which just goes to show that sometimes all we really need is a good pair of rose colored glasses to see things in a better light.
8. Like Beef and Cheese
Buddy is extremely frank throughout the movie and it usually lands him in cringeworthy but hilarious situations. Just another reminder to be truthful to the things we say and do. Although, sometimes I’d admit a little white lie wouldn’t hurt.
9. Good News In Little Things

Sometimes even the littlest things can make a person happy. It’s always good to be grateful, ladies. Once you start looking at the things you have, you’ll begin to appreciate them a lot more.
10. Room For Everyone
Let me end the list with this quote from Buddy. As the beloved song goes, Santa’s making a list and checking it twice. One thing we should note though is that we always have an opportunity to choose kindness in every situation we’re in. Whether it’s through volunteering at an animal shelter or choosing to help your mom make dinner just because, remember that a little bit of kindness goes a long way.
