Discover the who’s, what’s, and why’s of The Emmys this year! Get a glimpse of TV’s biggest night and find out who made the sweetest success, brilliant speeches, and unexpected moments in this annual awarding ceremony.
The 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards is a celebration of all things on television. This ceremony is organized by Academy of Television Arts and Sciences that recognized the diversity, best performances, and best TV shows in the past year. If you’re an avid fan of TV series, The Emmys is an awards’ night that should not be missed!
For this year, Jimmy Kimmel graced the stage of the Microsoft Theater to be the night’s host. The most-awaited opening monologue of Kimmel summed up the state of television for the past year (including different networks), with the help of the TV shows that added colors to television watching. His wit and speed in delivering his joke-filled lines caught the audience’s attention for hours, including the PBJ sandwiches that his mom made for them! Kimmel also did not let his moment pass without touching politics in his momentum. (courage it is!)
9 Highlights From The Emmys You Can Talk About On Lunch Break
As a performer, being nominated for The Emmys is already an honor. But what makes it sweeter is being announced as a winner and going home with an award. It’s like a confirmation that you did well, right?
With more than three hours of telecast, The Emmys was packed with surprises, stars, and smiles of triumphs that will surely be a part of your coffee or lunch break talks the day after.
If you’re not able to watch the TV’s biggest night, you can still catch up on the biggest moments ’cause here are the highlights that you need to talk about.
1. Hot Red Carpet Looks
To start off, the talk of the town is about the outfits our favorite celebs wore to The Emmys. (And of course, who they came with is also something to take note of) You can talk about best and worst dressed stars for the night! And oh, don’t forget to mention how badass Jessie Graff is for doing a back handspring on the red carpet–in HEELS.
2. Best Television Drama Series and Best Comedy Series
After all the buzz, “Game of Thrones” set the fire as the winner of Best Television Drama Series. The fantasy series got the heart of its viewers by bringing them into a fictional world of magic and of course, dragons. It’s actually a back-to-back award for them since they also got the same award last year. Moreover, “Veep” bagged the award for the Best Comedy Series.
3. Louie Anderson’s first Emmy moment
For the first time, Louie Anderson accepted his first Emmy award as the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for the “Baskets” as he played as a woman on the FX series.
4. Sarah Paulson and her best actress award
In her stunning emerald green gown, Sarah Paulson was declared as the Outstanding Lead Actress in a limited series or movie category. She played the role of prosecutor Marcia Clark in “People v. O.J. Simpson”. Before taking the award, she gave a warm hug to her co-actor Cuba Gooding, Jr. She’s been nominated for 5 years in a row and finally, this year is her time!
5. “Hallelujah” cover by Tori Kelly for “In Memoriam” segment
This was a special segment to commemorate everyone we’ve lost for the past year. This includes the likes of Alan Rickman, Merle Haggard, Natalie Cole,David Bowie, Prince and more.
6. Stranger Things cast dance to Uptown Funk Pre-Show
These Kids haven’t been nominated yet, but we’re sure to see them next year to score some awards. Jimmy put them to work before the actual show and performed “Uptown Funk”. It was super adorable! And yes, Millie Bobby Brown can hit some serious notes.
7. Jimmy Kimmel and Matt Damon feud
Of course, everyone who watches Jimmy Kimmel Lives knows that there’s an undying feud between Jimmy and Matt Damon. And what better venue than The Emmys for Matt Damon to tease Jimmy Kimmel for not winning an Emmy award? 1 point for you, Matt Damon!
8. Another first for Kate McKinnon
All smiles (and tears) from Kate McKinnon as she received her first Emmy award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy series for “Saturday Night Live”.
9. Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ wins in a Comedy series
It’s another momentous victory for Julia Louis-Dreyfus as she received her Outstanding Lead Actress award in a comedy series for “Veep”. She also delivered a touching speech (and left the audience in tears) as she dedicated her award to her late father who passed away last week.
