Webster defines squad as “a small group engaged in a common effort or occupation.”
The Urban Dictionary defines it as “crew, posse, gang: an informal group of individuals with a common identity and a sense of solidarity.” As for me, I define it simply as a group of men or women who look good and make us want to achieve the so-called #squadgoals.
Ever since Taylor Swift launched her “Bad Blood” video where each of her squadmates was featured, I believe that was the time the term was reincarnated to the meaning we know now. Being in a girl squad is cool and awesome. That’s not adding to the fact that celebrity girl squads are often composed of the prettiest, sexiest and funniest women you’ll ever meet!
However, what can these celebrity girl squads mean for us? Are we just supposed to look at them with envy and wish we had the same group of friends? Are we supposed to emulate what they do and achieve those #squadgoals people are talking about? Or, maybe, it’s not just all about the looks, but the substance of a squad’s composition that we should look into.
Ask yourself, why do you want to be a part of a group? You know it’s not just about being cool or having someone to talk to. The answer is simple and I can sum it up in one word: Belongingness. Yep! Each and everyone of us wants to belong and if we want that to happen, there’s no better company than a group of women who will be there to support us all the way.
So before we judge these celebrity girl squads for always looking great together, which makes us all jealous (to be honest), let us also think about why these Hollywood celebrities and A-listers need a group of friends of their own. Surely, they want female support, love and care as well considering that Hollywood and the modeling industry are crazy places to work in.
Need more proof that their friendship is more than just face value? Here are the most popular celebrity girl squads we cheer for:
1. The SNL Squad
The SNL squad consists of Maya Rudolph, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. But the other ladies from the show also join in from time-to-time. This squad is known for their comedic skills and hilarious antics, which is why seeing them all together just instantly brings a smile to your face. No other group knows humor like these women, which is why they made sure to remake Swift’s “Bad Blood” video and feature their own “Dope Squad.”
2. The Kardashian and Jenner Sisters
The Kardashian and Jenner sisters are probably the most talked about family in the entire world and it’s not really a surprise. Even if the family gets a bad rap about being overexposed on TV and on social media, still, it cannot be argued that they still grab people’s attentions. But more than their popularity, sisterhood bond is hard to break. Even if you’ve seen them fight on the reality show, the fact remains, these five women are sisters and they’ll stick it out til’ the end.
3. The JLaw Squad
How can you not feel anything when you see Jennifer Lawrence, Adele and Emma Stone together out for dinner? This is by far my most favorite squad because I believe they’re the real-est people you’ll meet in Hollywood. Plus, I love them as individuals and putting them all together like this is just sooo cool! Here’s what Jennifer has to say about her squad:
“I love Emma. She cracks me up; she’s so “theater.” She’s so adorable. And Adele and I met, like, a year or so ago. Adele and I are a bit harsher; Emma’s never had a bad thought about anybody in her life. It’s so weird; I don’t like new people. But these two women—and Amy—they’re really lovely. And they’re so normal. I feel like I’m hanging out with my friends—my friends that don’t give a f—k about what I do.”
4. The Taylor Swift Squad
The Taylor Swift squad is the squad that gave birth to a whole new meaning for the word and I’m not even surprised. Pop stars + supermodels + actresses and you get the hottest squad out there! But hey, these girls aren’t just doing it for the camera. Taylor makes sure to give back to her fans one way or another and I’m 100% sure these girls support each other in their own charitable efforts too. This is how Taylor describes her friendship with the ladies:
“My friendship group is one of my favorite things about my life right now. Our friends really have each other’s back. It’s the first time in my life that I’ve had anything strong like that in the friendship department.”
5. JLaw and Amy Schumer
The most favorite Hollywood friendship right now is Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer and it’s not hard to understand why. These ladies are real to one another, no pretenses whatsoever. We like the idea that both of these funny and outspoken ladies have banded together in what seem like a BFF journey. Oh, and by the way, they are making a movie together and even wrote the script for it!
“So we go to the Hamptons, and Jennifer and I have become friends. I was like, ‘Oh, we’re going on a boat tour tomorrow. You should come.’ It was kind of a hypothetical,” Schumer said. “And she was like, ‘I think I’m coming!’ I was like, ‘Oh, my God!'”
“They’re [Amy’s friends] like nurses and teachers, and I’m like, ‘Jennifer Lawrence is coming on a boat with us tomorrow. They’re all screaming!”
“We wound up going jet skiing and I was like, ‘I’ll drive! I’ve got this!’ And she was like, ‘No, I’m Hunger Games.”
You know what, I’ve heard a lot of people diss celebrity squads and even diss #squadgoals. I’m not really sure why but I like it! I like the fact that these women spend time together, are real with one another, show love and support to one another and just act like normal women together despite their celebrity status.
If you really think about it, celebrities are every bit of human as we are. They also need to belong. Working in an industry where everything seems too unreal or superfluous, these women need something solid to hold on to and there’s nothing greater than friendship with women who truly appreciate and care for you.
So if you have a squad right now, let your girlfriends know how much you love them. You may not be followed by the paparazzi, shop at the most expensive stores, dine at fancy restaurants or dress up to red carpet events… what matters is that you know that your gal pal is just a call away and you trust that friendship. Don’t envy the celeb squads, don’t even feel jealous—whenever you see them, realize that you’ve got a squad of your own and you’re very lucky to have them by your side too!
