Who better to discuss French style than French icon herself, Marion Cotillard?
French actress, Marion Cotillard, is no doubt a stunner. On top of being one of the industry’s most talented, genuine actresses, Marion knows how to dress and comes to every event looking absolutely flawless.
In an interview with Vogue, Marion demystifies her personal style (by saying she doesn’t have one), talks about how she tackles the red carpet without breaking down, and shares the secret to the universally-coveted, effortlessly-chic French woman style.
With gems like these, you’d do best to read the full interview below:
Marion Cotillard Is Everything You Dreamed She’d Be
Preparing for a phone call with Marion Cotillard is a multimedia experience. Hours not spent indulging La Vie en Rose daydreams and compulsively rewatching the Macbeth trailer in which Cotillard plays the Lady (to Michael Fassbender’s Macbeth) will be devoted to sifting through Google image search results for the inelegant but apt prompt “Marion Cotillard Style.”
Isn’t confidence incredibly sexy? One of our favorite parts of the interview was Marion’s answer to the question, “How does it feel to be a French woman in a world where everyone loves French women?” It was on point!
“Well… some of that sounds positive. But I guess we should all just be who we are, what we are, and not try to look like anyone else but ourselves. But there’s something about the French woman… a sense of freedom that must read and show in the way we dress… Yeah, I guess—freedom.”
I’ve often wondered what it is about French women that we love so much — was it their pared-down style of dress? Their tousled hair? Their classic red lips? Or the beret?
And then I fully absorbed Marion’s answer to the question and finally realized that it’s none of the above — it’s not how a French woman styles herself, but the way in which she carries herself. When you dress freely, you don’t care about being judged or staying current with trends. Your primary concern is expressing who you are as an individual. When choosing outfits, the only thing that matters to you is how you feel in what you’re wearing. If it makes you feel good, you’re going to wear it. If it doesn’t, you won’t. It’s as simple as that.
If following this principle, we can all unleash the French woman within us! We don’t need to be trendy, try to be “fashionable,” or dress to impress. All we need to do is be confident and choose clothes that reflect our individuality, rather than conform to current norms and customs.
We love this interview with Marion! It’s empowering, eye-opening and uplifting. If it were even possible, it made us love her even more!
