You weren’t thinking about going out, were you?
NYE isn’t like other holidays that emphasize familial bonding and the coziness of one’s home. New Years Eve is about getting dressed up, going out and, if you’re anything like what I used to be, getting LIT.
While I used to love going out about town and drinking my way to the new year, nowadays, I’m all about sitting on that couch, eating snacks, watching movies and drinking… 6 cans of soda, that is.
If the thought of you staying home on NYE has you saying, “Preach, sister!” then we’re probably soul mates and should just run away together to a house full of couches and a movie library. But since we both know that’s not going to happen, I’ll do something more realistic and dedicate this post to you, the anti-social couch-potatoes of the world! Woo!
These fun, thrilling movies will make you laugh, take you on an adventure and are guaranteed to give you the feels. Whether you’re watching them alone, with your significant other or with friends, you’ll have a blast sitting at home, stuffing your face and getting whisked away to strange lands with entertaining characters.
These movie and snack pairings will make your NYE the best one yet!
1. Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi/Cosmic Brownies
Yes, the 7th episode is AMAZING and just as great as the original trilogy (well done, J.J. Abrams!), but the best episode of the series has to be Return of The Jedi. Not only do we get to see the adorable Ewoks (who speak Tagalog, by the way), we see a side of Vader that Kylo Ren must not be aware of. The end completely changes the way you view the series, which is why if any movie should be watched on NYE, it’s this one.

2. Mean Girls/Oreos with PB & Dr. Pepper
The Oreos with Dr. Pepper and peanut butter combo is a throwback to Lindsay’s days as both Hallie and Annie in The Parent Trap. God, how I loved that movie. But since Mean Girls is so much better to watch on NYE and you can’t just drink cranberry juice or eat cheese fries, I figured I’d bring together the best of both worlds by honoring the greatest roles Lindsay Lohan’s ever played.
3. What We Do In The Shadows/Count Chocula Cereal
If you’ve never heard of What We Do In The Shadows, it’s a hilarious mockumentary that follows a group of vampires and their daily life in the modern age. Fans of Jemaine from Flight of the Conchords will get a kick out of seeing him play Vladislav, a pervy, lovable vampire.
And, obviously, if you’re going to watch this comedy, you’ve got to pair it with Count Chocula cereal!
4. Beverly Hills Cop/Half Baked Ice Cream
Beverly Hills Cop, now a cult classic, has to be one of Eddie Murphy’s greatest movies (although you’d think it would be the Nutty Professor, right? Haha, just kidding. Even Eddie Murphy regrets being in that movie). If you’re all about watching a throwback movie on Thursday, it should probably be this one.
And what pairs better with comedies than decadent, sugar-laden ice cream? Nothing. Especially when it comes to Ben & Jerry’s Half-Baked concoction.
5. Zoolander/Monchie Bar
The monchie bar is about as colorful and fun to eat as Zoolander is to watch. Monchie bars are filled with cereals, candies and other treats from the 90s that will make you nostalgic for the best decade ever. While Zoolander was released in 2001, it’s close enough to the 90s to make it a themed movie and snack pairing.
6. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest/Sriracha Popcorn
I’m not ashamed to admit that I liked the Pirates of the Caribbean series WAY more than I had expected to. While the first one was great, the second one has to be my favorite. Davy Jones is a badass character who knows how to play a mean organ. And, just like the movie itself, Popcorn Indiana’s Sriracha Popcorn is just as sweet and spicy as the action and drama in the movie.
If you have yet to try this Sriracha popcorn, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that it captures the sugary sweetness and tongue-prickling heat of your favorite sauce.
7. Princess Bride/Cookie Dough
What could be sweeter than Princess Bride? Cookie dough! While traditional cookie dough is considered unsafe to eat (although we all know that we’ve eaten it anyway), Cappello’s grain-free, refined sugar-free cookie dough is safe to eat right out of the packaging. Which is what I’ve done. Many, many times.
Just because you’re planning on letting loose before the new year, doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in a treat without having it be healthy. This cookie dough is about as healthy as it gets, meaning you can eat the whole roll and not feel guilty about it in the morning. If only one night stands were like that, right?
8. Wet Hot American Summer/Munchies
Having a group of friends over for New Years Eve? Then you need to watch Wet Hot American Summer — both the movie and Netflix series. And since the show is set at a camp in the 80s, I figured the most appropriate snack would be Munchies because, well, you know…
My favorite blend? The Flamin’ Hot which is the only one worth eating, in my opinion.
9. Legally Blonde/See’s Assorted Chocolates
Unlike Elle, you don’t have to be dumped by the person you thought you were going to marry to indulge in a box of chocolates. But, when that scene does come on, you’ll be right there to cry and stuff your face with her.
10. Labryinth/Skittles, Candy & More Candy
When David Bowie is in a movie, you better believe his performance is going to be just as great as his music. Labyrinth is a movie in which a young Jennifer Connelly has to save her baby brother from a wicked Goblin King, played by none other than the man, the legend himself. What ensues is a fun, fantastical romp through a mysterious land in which nothing is what it seems.
For a movie as colorful and wonderful as this, only Skittles, sour gummy worms and Starbursts will do the trick. But, Skittles are a must… especially Sour Skittles.
Staying home is one of the most fun ways to spend a night, especially a holiday night when everyone is bound to be out fighting for room at the bar, grinding on strangers, and being the best drunk version of themselves.
If you’re still unconvinced you want to ring 2016 in as a couch potato, these 10 reasons to stay in on NYE might change your mind.
