Sunglasses for Every Face Shape

March 5, 2018 By Perry Belcher Leave a Comment

Audrey Hepburn knew it. John Lennon knew it. And Rihanna knows it. Sunglasses can give you a whole new outlook on life. They can change your image instantly. And more importantly, they are must-have eye protection. In other words, sunglasses are possibly the most necessary accessory you can wear…so why not make sure they’re stylish, too? Here are some tips and trends for finding the most flattering sunnies this summer:

Made in the Shade

First, look in the mirror. If you’ve worn the same Wayfarers for 20 years, it may be time to see life in a whole new way. Make time to check out updated frames and lenses at your local optician or sunglass boutique. If you don’t have a clue about what shapes of glasses look best on you, get some professional help, especially if you wear prescription glasses and you need to get the most out of the money you spend since these sunglasses are more of an investment.

The most flattering shaped sunglasses will usually be the opposite shape of your face. However, with the dozens of choices available now, nothing beats trying on the glasses in front of a mirror. While many of us have a “wardrobe” of sunglasses to match our every fashion mood, sunglasses can be expensive, so it’s best to choose wisely. (And then try not lose them!)

If you have an oval face

Then you’ve truly got it made in the shade! Oval shapes can carry off just about any style of glasses. Just make sure your glasses are as wide as the widest part of your face. Proportion is important when you try on sunglasses. Aviators are always a good bet for this face shape. This year, the colorful tinted mirrored aviators are the trendiest way to wear this classic shape.

For longer, oblong-shaped faces

Check out glasses that have more of an oval shape. Strong, horizontal brow bars are also good bets to balance out oblong faces. Thicker temple frames can also add extra width and detract from large noses. Trendy glasses this year include many frames embellished with decorative details like crystals and studs.

Round faces

Are complemented with more angular styles of sunglasses. Oversized rectangular frames are one way to balance fuller faces. The butterfly cat-eye is one of the latest styles that flatter rounder faces.

Heart-shaped faces

…benefit from eyewear frames that are squared off in strong frames that boast darker colors and finishes like tortoise or black. Strongly defined brow bars may also help to balance the upper part of this shape of face. Rimless round frames which is one of this year’s biggest trends in eyewear is another flattering shape that compliments the heart-shaped face.

If you have a square face

Sunglasses in more curvaceous shapes are generally preferable. The horizontal space-age sunglasses that are trending now like the colorful ones Rihanna sports for Dior in its ad campaign are perfect for this shape of face.

With so many options in colors and styles of eyewear, choosing the sunglasses that are right for you may be overwhelming. Stick to colors that reflect the colors in the clothes that you wear. Another tip: choose glasses with frames that provide contrast to your normal skin tone. Also, consider the color of your hair — dark hair, dark frames; light skin, lighter frames.

Sunglasses can be one of your best fashion statements, year in and year out.

But sun protection for your eyes is even more critical. Make sure the glasses you buy are polarized and block the maximum amount of UV rays. Then pick the most flattering pair of shades for you. It’s easy to change your view of the world and how the world views you — one pair of sunglasses at a time.

Statement sunglasses can update your fashion outlook fast.
