What does life bring to the table after 25–and what are things you can’t get away with now that you’re 25? If you ever catch yourself thinking about what stays and leaves in your life, here’s a glimpse of it all, for you and I.
25 was such wonderful number for me. This may sound cliche to you, but it actually felt like a roller coaster ride–terrifying at the start but rewarding at the end. These years have brought tears of joy and sadness to my eyes, broke and invigorated my heart for so many reasons, and taught me so much about what life really is about. They say you’ll never know until you get there. And as I got through 25 years of making and living the life I wanted for myself, it made me realize that there are things that I didn’t that I couldn’t get away with anymore because I’m an adult now.
Things You Can’t Get Away With Now That You’re An Adult
Just like you, I too stormed through a lot of things on my mind. I even thought to myself, “Is this mid-life crisis?” But it’s really natural. We all get to wonder about what would another year be like. So let’s get right down to that trail, find out the things that you can’t get away with even after 25.
1. Depending on your parents for money
When I was younger, I already thought about how I would see myself when I reach 25. You know, a job that I love that pays me well, my own house, my own car, my own business, and a bank account where I keep my savings for my future. But then, right when I was adding numbers to my life, it hit me. Things didn’t go as planned, and money was something I struggled with. Who else can you turn to if it isn’t your parents? If you would ever feel odd about it, don’t worry darling, the idea of still depending on our parents to assist you financially is not surprising at all. Just remember, you’re over 25, you have to work harder to be financially independent and return the favor to your parents.
2. Not paying your student loan or credit card debt
Over 25 or not over 25, we’re guilty of not keeping an eye on our payables. It is that one thing that we can never escape from. Not unless you’re Kylie Jenner who already has her life together at such young age that you won’t even have to worry about your loans and credit card debts anymore. But here’s what I learned, no matter how much your bills state, keep an eye on them. Never go past through being aware of what to pay. Give yourself a hand from all that, and start paying slowly. Don’t be buried alive with your debts haunting you. And when it comes to shopping, self-discipline is all you have to tell yourself.
3. Getting drunk on a school/work night
You always believed beer over anything at anytime, huh? Well, guess what? It still is a habit you can’t get away with. Booze always does something incredible when we’re stresses at school or at work, but at the other end of the spectrum, it also messes up with our body. We are at the stage of our lives wherein we need to be more cautious.
4. Buying cheap booze
I’ll elaborate more on booze. Now that you’re a grown woman, it’s about high time that you rethink your choices. Go for something classy like a glass of wine or a martini instead of bingeing on beer too much. You can do this with super close friends, but not in a formal event or an office party.
5. Dating “for fun”
Did it ever cross your mind that when you turn 25 or so, you already see yourself settled down with the man you’ve always asked for? That occurred to me as well. But you see, as I’ve told you before, life sometimes takes a leap on your plans. Relationships are no escape to that. The more you set your plans from year to year, the more you would realize you want to take things slow. And if you’re still not in a long-term relationship with someone you see yourself with in the future, you’re on the market, darling. Just take the dating for fun lightly because you will be over 25 and you have to put an end mark to fun, and really be with someone you want to be your future.
6. Staying at a job you’re not happy with
Another thing I realized about getting my life together even after 25 is staying in a job I wasn’t happy with. It was pretty sad but that was the time in my life that I had to hold on to it to keep me afloat. It really is something you can’t get away with even when you’re after 25–when you still can’t find something that you deserve. All I can say to you is even when you’re not happy with the job and how it pays you, get your work done. Get through with it all and find that job you have dreamed about since you were younger when the time is right. Know that you can never be successful with a job you don’t even actually like doing.
7. Not keeping up with current events
We’re at this stage in life where we’re so busy with work and social life that we tend to forget that we’re part of world bigger than us. You cannot not know what going on around you, it affects you in one way or another. See what’s happening and try to do something about it other than posting on social media.
8. Self-deprecation
There will always come a time in our lives when we feel less of ourselves. It can still even hit even when you’re over 25. Things can get worse when life doesn’t turn out how you thought it would be for you. It’s that time where you’re trying to figure out who you are and how you want to navigate the world. You may be hard on yourself once you get to a certain point where everything is messed up but don’t forget that you’re only over 25. Give yourself a pat on the back for reaching this far. Be brave, you still have a long way to go.
9. Coming to a party empty handed
Yes, you can still be empty-handed even when you’re already over 25. Getting invited to a party knowing you won’t be able to bring anything for the host isn’t something you should be embarrassed about. You won’t have any choice if you really don’t have your last resort. You can’t even take down an invitation for that reason. But if you have something to pick out from the fridge that you can prepare for the party, then do so. If not, just be present and be cool with it.
10. Being unhealthy
Guilty pleasures in life we cannot resist. Yes, if you really thought being in your mid-20s is also about living the healthy life, think not. Take it from me, I have tried to be as healthy as I could on my 25 and over it, but I still end up eating a bag of chips, drinking booze, and just the hell with it. You can associate being healthy with eating vegetables, taking carbs on the low, hitting the gym five times a week or what. Commit to a lifestyle change!
11. Not helping your future self
Getting confused on how to live your life will still hit you in the middle of the night. You’ll even find yourself all over the place just like I did but that’s not what’s only there. I had a professor in college that repeatedly told us to do things today our future selves will thank us for, and it was honestly the best advice I’ve ever received. Those words have stuck with me. I’m a lot further along than I would have been if I didn’t take his advice. Just don’t give up too easily.
