2015 was the year of girl power and badass women.
Before we say goodbye to 2015, let’s take some time to acknowledge the most badass women who carried the torch of female pride, power and courage throughout the year. Mind you, our list of heroines doesn’t just include women who took on zombies or brought balance to the force on the big screen; it also includes those that fought for women’s rights in the real world and inspired men and women to make a difference.

This list isn’t just about the movies, it’s about the rise of empowered women in both the real and cinematic world. In the past two years or so, starring strong women in movies and TV shows has become a common occurrence. Looking back, I can really only remember 3 badass women who led the action in their own films: Tomb Raider, Salt, and Nikita (played by Angelina Jolie, Milla Jovovich and Maggie Q.). Later, stars like Lucy (Scarlett Johansson), Katniss Everdeen (JLaw) and Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) rose to give later generations a female role model to look up to.
In a gender-biased industry, this is a huge step! The message that is now being portrayed is that instead of playing the damsel in distress, women can do the exact same things, if not more, than men can.
Who’s my favorite female heroine of the year? It’s got to be Imperator Furiosa from Mad Max: Fury Road. Charlize Theron was a real badass in that role. We love seeing the growth of women in lead roles. It’s a trend that we hope one day becomes the norm.
