Love is in the air!
While we’re about love everyday of the year, there is that one special, designated day that we either love or hate: Valentine’s Day! And while Valentine’s Day is often left for lovers, we forget that anyone can have a Valentine’s date without having to be in a committed (or just-for-funsies) relationship. I’m a strong advocate of spending time with all of your loved ones — friends and family — and not just the person you’re sleeping with. Oops, I mean, in a romantic relationship with.
If you’re looking forward to the 14th, you’ll love these off-the-cuff date night ideas anyone can get in on; and if you’re dreading the 14th like a pap smear, these date night ideas might convince you to change your mood and get in on the VDay fun.
1. Get On The Ice Rink
February is still technically winter, so take advantage of the ice and go ice skating! If you’re in a warmer climate where it doesn’t snow, look up the nearest ice skating rink and pretend like you’re walking through a winter wonderland. What’s great about this date night idea is that it’s relaxed and takes the pressure off of having to hold a meaningful conversation or look your best. Instead, wear comfy clothes and have fun! And if neither of you know how to skate, you can learn together which always brings people closer together.
3. Head Up To The Mountains
If you, your date or your friends are the physically active type, head up to the mountains for a fun, outdoors experience! You guys can hang out at a lodge, go skiing, or kick it old school and sled down snowy hills! This is the perfect date idea if you’re looking for something adventurous. Make sure to pack some warm clothes and a lunch before heading out!
4. Netflix and Chill
The infamous “Netflix and chill” is another great Valentines Day date night idea, especially if you’re not fond of being out and battling the cold, winter chill. Cozy up inside your house and watch your favorite movies or TV shows together. You can even cook a delicious meal together to break the ice.
5. Play Some Board Games
As much pressure as we put on ourselves to be perfect, we forget that dates are all about having fun and enjoying each other’s company. If you prefer staying in (amen!), make sure to buy some playing cards and board games. Placing wagers make the games even more interesting and if you want to up the ante, perhaps some strip poker is what you’re looking for? Strip poker is fun in every occasion — even when you’re with your friends.
7. Build A Snowman
If you live in the Mid West, you’re probably up to your ankles in snow. Instead of staying huddled up indoors this Valentine’s Day, go out and build a snowman! Make it even more exciting by turning it into a competition where the loser has to… give you a massage for 30 minutes or make dinner. Feeling feisty? Have a snowball fight. Avoid cabin fever this winter and go out! Appropriately bundled, of course.
8. Make It A Boy’s Night Out
Food brings people together which is great news for all of you foodies out there. It’s for this reason that going out to dinner or lunch is the best way to get to know someone — romantically or platonically. But this time around, instead of going to your favorite eatery, opt to try something new and exotic instead. Look for a restaurant with a unique theme (pirates) or cuisine (Ethiopian, Thai, fusion). It’s about more than just the food, it’s about the experience too!
10. Laugh!
11. Sweat It Out
Maybe you’ve both passed the “dinner and movie” point and now feel comfortable enough around each other to sweat, grunt and burn some calories. If so, plan a workout together. You can either sweat to an at-home video or hit the gym. Remember, endorphins (the happy hormone) are released when you exercise which is awesome when you’re on a date!
Shake off the pressure of Valentine’s Day and opt to have fun instead! Even if it’s your first date, think of it as an opportunity to get to meet someone else and experience something new.
