Take A Spooky Trip Through Time With These Halloween Costumes

MODE is at it again with another video from their “100 Years of” series, and I just had to share it with you! People were dressing up for Halloween long before trick-or-treating, pumpkin carving, and Hocus Pocus came about. It’s a tradition that dates back to 1585! In this video from MODE, you’ll see what 100 years of Halloween costumes looks like in only 3 minutes. It’s quite amazing to watch, if you ask me! Seeing what Halloween costumes people were wearing 100 years or even 50 years ago is such an eye-opening experience, and it’s giving me major inspiration for my costume this year. It’s a must-see for Halloween and fashion enthusiasts alike.

So let’s take a closer look at some note-worthy Halloween costumes from the last century, shall we?

1. 1915

Halloween costumes back in 1915 were all about the masks. There’s something really creepy about wearing a grotesque mask like this with even the most normal of black dresses. This is also a simple Halloween costume—all you need is a mask and an LBD!

2. 1925

Witch costumes are some of the most common and readily-available ideas for Halloween, and it dates back to 1925! Grab a broom, a pointy hat, and a black dress, and you’re all set. You can also throw on a mask for added mystery.

3. 1935

This is probably the creepiest Mickey Mouse costume I’ve ever seen! And like preceding decades, Halloween costumes in 1935 were all about the masks. An iconic character like Mickey Mouse is another simple costume idea because it’s easy to gather things like mouse ears, big white gloves, and red and white clothes.

4. 1945

By 1945 though, masks were out and costumes got more and more creative. This sexy devil relies heavily on props like horns, a trident, and a red tail.

5. 1955

Halloween costumes in the 50s were All-American—the cowgirl was a huge trend! Like previous decades, make sure to get creative with your props.

6. 1965

The 60s were one of the most stylish decades ever, and Halloween costumes were no exception. This all-black cat costume is so chic, it looks like it’s from this decade! I’d definitely rock this at a Halloween party.

7. 1975

The 70s saw a lot of fun, psychedelic prints which were reflected in costumes as well. Even if this costume is super creepy, I can’t stop staring at those red and white striped socks!

8. 1985

Costumes in the 80s were all about #throwbacks, and this Grecian-inspired costume is no exception! Turn a plain white dress into your Halloween costume by accessorizing with a rope belt and gold accents. It’s a costume you didn’t know you already had in your wardrobe.

9. 1995

The 90s saw a lot of fun and colorful styles, especially in Halloween costumes. All the ruffles, ribbons, contrasting yellow and black colors, and huge heart headband just scream 90s fashion.

10. 2005

The 90s had such a huge impact on popular culture and fashion. People were already wearing throwback 90s costumes for Halloween as early as the 2000s! This Britney Spears-inspired costume is another idea that uses items you’ll most likely have in your closet. And don’t forget the pigtail braids!

11. 2015

With all the pop culture icons we have today, it’s no surprise that we’re turning to them for Halloween costume inspiration. This Kim Kardashian costume is so creative, it’s totally worth the effort! Plus, choosing a current icon as inspiration means that everyone will recognize your costume.

Over the past ten decades, Halloween costumes have shifted from spooky masks and scary characters to popular figures, personalities, and cultural references. We’ve come a long way from the haphazardly-made masks of 1915. But one thing’s for sure, Halloween is a time to experiment and try out a new identity or personality, even just for one day.
