Fashion 101: The Clothing Guides You Need to Survive

September 16, 2019 By Jackie Johnson 3 Comments

We’re all fashionistas in our own right, but sometimes we need take our outfits from ordinary to extraordinary. In those cases, I turn to clothing guides: extra knowledge and inspiration only the pros can teach us. There are so many clothing guides for every possible dilemma, whether you need to cuff a sleeve or find the perfect shoe. So which clothing clothing guides do you really need? Read on for essential styling tips, whatever the season!

The Essential Clothing Guides Every Girl Should Know

One thing separates stylish girls (and stylists!) from ordinary people: knowledge. Stylish girls don’t just wear clothes, they put together outfits with know-how and the right clothing guides. And thankfully, a lot of these clothing guides are simple, everyday things you can do to change the way you dress for the better. From knowing how to mix prints to deciding on hemlines and shoe heights, knowing the fundamentals behind what looks good can take you from a trend follower to a trendsetter. Sounds like a daunting task? Let me make it easier for you:

1. Mix Prints Like A Pro

The simplest way to mix prints? Pair a fun print with a monochromatic pattern like stripes or polka dots. But if you’re feeling adventurous, mix different prints within the same color family. Then, add a third print for accent! Doesn’t this outfit look so chic?

2. Make Your Leggings Look Stylish

Some people think leggings should be restricted to the gym. And while I wouldn’t wear them to work, the right clothing guides can make your leggings look stylish! Try pairing them with longer shirts and coats, or go for faux leather leggings for a more dressed-up look.

3. Style Button-Down Shirts For Any Occasion

We all have at least a few button-down shirts in your closets, so you should know how to wear them! Dress up your button-down shirts with a high-waisted skirt or culottes. Or, dress it down with a pair of jeans and edgy sandals.

4. Match your skirt length to your shoes

The basic rule for shoe and skirt length is: longer skirts need lower shoes. It makes sense: why would you wear shoes that will be covered up by your skirt anyway? Flaunt them! So if you’re wearing a maxi skirt, stick to sandals, pumps, and low-cut boots during the cold season. Save the knee-high boots for mini skirts and shorts!

5. How To Cuff Your Sleeves

Cuffing your shirt sleeves is an art, and before you try it you need to decide what look you’re going for. If you want a more laid-back feel: fold, roll, tug the corners, and scrunch. Or just fold once! If you’re off to work, a classic two or three-fold is a polished choice.

6. How To Layer Properly

The basic rule of layering is: your outer layers must be longer than your inner layers. This is something I swear by, and it’s a simple idea with a huge impact on your over-all look. If you have a short jacket, tuck your shirt in or wear a crop top under. For longer coats, make sure your dress is shorter than the hem of your coat!

With these clothing guides, I’m sure you’ll dress better every day. Whether you’re wearing the trendiest pieces or timeless classics, you could use a good cuff or two. Remember: pay attention to hemlines, explore your options, and always dress for the occasion!
